ShangriLa Beijing, started construction in 1984 and opened on 22 August 1987, a joint venture between the then China National Metals and Minerals Import & Export Corporation and Hong Kong‘s ShangriLa Hotel （Beijing） Limited, it was one of the first largescale Sinoforeign jointventure luxury hotels built in China at the early stage of reform and opening up in the 1980s, and also ShangriLa‘s first hotel in Beijing and second hotel in China. It is also ShangriLa Group‘s first hotel in Beijing and second hotel in China.

The development of ShangriLa Group in the Mainland is inseparable from the visionary investment of Mr Guo Henian, the founder of the ShangriLa brand and a Southeast Asian business magnate. In the early 1980s, when the winds of reform and opening up were blowing and the country‘s doors were opened, Mr Guo saw the enormous potential of the Chinese market and began to lay the groundwork: in 1984, ShangriLa Hotels and Resorts opened its first hotel in China, the ShangriLa Hotel, Hangzhou, on the picturesque Beishan Road on the banks of Hangzhou‘s West Lake. Beijing was the second stop on ShangriLa‘s journey to China, and at the end of 1983, the Beijing ShangriLa project was signed, with an investment of US75.2 million by Mr Guo Henian to build the first ShangriLa Hotel in Beijing, in the Haidian district of western Beijing. Groundbreaking took place the following year and the hotel was completed in 1987, with the ShangriLa Group in charge of management, making it the most luxurious international brand hotel in the capital at the time. The Beijing International Trade Centre （BITC）, built in 1984 by Mr Guo Henian in cooperation with the State Economic and Trade Commission （SETC） in eastern Beijing, has been the subject of much discussion. The China World Trade Centre, with its hotels, offices, shopping malls and highend international flats, is representative of Beijing‘s CBD, where the China World Hotel and the China World Trade Centre echo with ShangriLa Beijing, witnessing the city‘s everchanging and thriving development.

ShangriLa Beijing consists of two buildings, the main building, Jing Court, and the New Court, which opened twenty years later in 2007, with a total of 670 guest rooms and suites, and seven restaurants and bars of different styles, including the exquisite French restaurant AZUR Gathering, Nishimura Japanese Cuisine, which is all about the ingredients, and the new menu of the Cantonese restaurant Shang Palace, and the Café CHA buffet restaurant, which is known as the ”Home of the Lobster”. ”The 3,000squaremetre Chinese Garden, known as the ”Mini Summer Palace”, is a traditional courtyard with small bridges, waterfalls and Chinese pavilions, and is one of the top luxury hotels in Beijing.

As one of the capital‘s top luxury hotels, ShangriLa Beijing has not only hosted many of the world‘s leading celebrities and undertaken countless largescale events, including the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2022 Winter Olympics, but has also become the preferred destination for business travellers and for conferences and banquets in the western part of the capital, where it has become a popular choice for guests, as well as an excellent investment destination.
